Alex Lifeson, born Alexander Zivojinovich on August 27, 1953, is a Canadian musician best known as the guitarist and one of the founding members of the legendary rock band Rush. Alongside Geddy Lee and initially drummer John Rutsey (later replaced by Neil Peart), Lifeson formed Rush in 1968.
Lifeson’s guitar playing has been a defining aspect of Rush’s sound throughout their career, incorporating elements of hard rock, progressive rock, and heavy metal. His playing style is characterized by his technical proficiency, creative use of effects, and melodic sensibility. Lifeson’s innovative approach to guitar has earned him recognition as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.
In addition to his guitar work, Lifeson has contributed backing vocals and occasional keyboards to Rush’s recordings. He has also been involved in the songwriting process, collaborating with Geddy Lee and Neil Peart to create the band’s distinctive sound and complex compositions.
Outside of his work with Rush, Lifeson has pursued various side projects and collaborations, including solo albums and guest appearances on other artists’ recordings. He is also an avid painter and has exhibited his artwork publicly.
After Rush’s final tour in 2015, Lifeson has remained active in the music scene, although the band officially retired from touring. He continues to make occasional appearances and collaborations while enjoying time for personal pursuits such as painting and spending time with his family.
